What are the best cruise lines? It is a natural enough question to ask, not only because it is always entertaining to learn of the best of anything, but also because it bears on how you might plan your next cruise vacation. If you are looking for the best cruise vacation, then presumably you’ll need to book it through the best cruise line.

Of course, what constitutes the best cruise line depends on what you value in a cruise line. If you are only interested in taking cruises to a particular part of the world – like, say, the Caribbean – then the best cruise line is probably the one that offers the most cruises to the places of the Caribbean you wish to visit. If you are really taken by enormous cruise ships, then you might consider the Royal Caribbean International cruise line the best, as two ships in its fleet, Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas, are the world’s largest cruise ships. But for a more general list of the best cruise lines, one that doesn’t place too much weight on any given characteristic of a cruise line, let’s consider which cruise lines are the top rated. (We used the same metric in our article about the top three cruise ships; it seemed to work in that case, so we have to assume it will work in this case as well.)

There are a number of sources on the Internet that rank the most highly rated cruise lines, so let’s take a look at a list composed by one well-regarded source, Condé Nast Traveler. A recent issue of this magazine listed 13 cruise lines as the top rated, as determined by the readers of this magazine (who, presumably, have sailed with these cruise lines). Although each of these 13 cruise lines is given a numerical score, the magazine does not place them in order from highest to lowest (or vice versa), but rather lists them in alphabetical order. So, allow us to reorganize the list from highest rated to lowest rated, as that seems more helpful for our purposes:

Yachts of Seabourn

Crystal Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Disney Cruise Line

Grand Circle Small Ship Cruises

SeaDream Yacht Club

Oceania Cruises (tied in rating to SeaDream Yacht Club)

Cunard Line

Silversea Cruises

Oberoi

Windstar Cruises

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection

Abercrombie & Kent

Depending on your knowledge of cruise lines, you might notice that many of these are small, luxury cruise lines. This makes sense, as the more expensive and luxurious cruise lines surely provide excellent service and accommodations. Otherwise, they couldn’t get away with charging more for a cruise vacation than other, more major cruise lines. (Interestingly, though, Disney Cruise Line is rated very highly, and it is definitely not a small cruise line.)

So, if you are looking for a highly rated cruise line to book a cruise through (and you can afford to do so), the list above points you to several excellent possibilities. Again, though, these aren’t necessarily the best cruise lines for everyone, as people want different things from their cruise vacations. We’ll keep posting articles that rank cruise lines by other methods, so stay on the look out for those.

A cruise ship is a cruise ship is a cruise ship, right? Well, that’s what we thought, until we started seriously considering what precisely makes one type of ship a cruise ship. What are the essential attributes of a cruise ship? If a cruise ship lacked one of these attributes, would it cease to be a cruise ship? Are there characteristics of a ship that necessarily make it a cruise ship? This is a grave ontological question, at least for those of us who take our cruises seriously, so below you’ll find a list of characteristics that ships must possess in order to be properly labeled a “cruise ship.”

The first and most important attribute of a cruise ship is that it must be a vessel used for the pleasure of its passengers. Taking a cruise is about enjoying yourself – it’s a vacation, plain and simple. If a ship doesn’t serve this function, then it can’t be a cruise ship.

But then what about things like sail boats and yachts? Many of these are used exclusively for pleasure, but surely sail boats and yachts aren’t cruise ships, right? That’s right, so all cruise ships must necessarily have on-board amenities that are designed for entertainment. These amenities include, but are not limited to, restaurants, movie theaters, bars/clubs, and casinos. And this brings us to our next essential characteristic.

Cruise ships must be fairly large, although we hesitate to put a specific figure on this lest one counterexample explodes our size requirement. The basic point of this criterion is that it must be possible to enjoy yourself on-board in some of the ways that you enjoy yourself on land, and this is only possible if the ship is of considerable girth. For example, you can take a walk on land and not pass the same point several times in ten minutes, and you can purchase items at retailers – the same must be possible on a cruise ship.

These last three points suggest our last characteristic: cruise ships must only take voyages that are for the sake of themselves. That’s a little convoluted, so allow us to explain. Cruise ships take people on trips that serve no other function than to take people on trips. Cruise ships are not in the business of transporting people or things from point A to point B – they are designed to carry people around a specified part of the world and then return them to the port from whence they departed. So, again, cruise ships must embark only on those journeys that seek no greater end than the journey itself. If a ship doesn’t do this, it’s probably an ocean liner or something like that.

Before concluding, two remarks are in order. First, we don’t pretend that this list covers all of the essential attributes of a cruise ship; there could be others. However, this list does list characteristics that all cruise ships must possess. In other words, we have listed the necessary conditions of a cruise ship, but we make no claim that they are sufficient. Second, our list makes the implicit suggestion that a ship may at one point be a cruise ship and at another not a cruise ship. This is reasonable, even if as a matter of fact most cruise ships stay cruise ships, and other ships don’t become cruise ships.

Luxury cruises are expensive and they feature a wide variety of entertainment options for adults only such as a large number of casinos, lounges, bars, and events just for couples and singles.

Although most cruises welcome all, some are less kid friendly than others, but not on purpose. Here’s what we mean. Luxury cruises are expensive and they feature a wide variety of entertainment options for adults only such as a large number of casinos, lounges, bars, and events just for couples and singles. These features tend to deter families with children. Many families are on a budget and interested in activities for kids will turn to cruise lines such as Disney and Carnival.

For adults, some of the top luxury cruise lines in the industry today are Orient Lines (specifically Orient’s Marco Polo cruise ship), Cunard Line (Queen Mary 2), Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Classic International, Costa Cruises, Cunard Line, Fred Olsen, Hebridean Island Cruises, African Safari Club, Crystal Cruises, Discover Egypt, Ocean Village, and P&O Cruises. Many Holland America Line and Norwegian Cruise Line vessels cater to adults as well.

When searching cruises for adults only there are also several signs that the line is probably (mostly) kid-free. Look for cruise lines that:

-Sail to exotic locations
-Offer under 50% supplement
-Offer single cabins,
-Offer shared cabins,
-Offer hosts

Hosts are simply “gentlemen” selected on the basis of their dancing ability. Dance hosts can be found on Cunard Lines Queen Elizabeth, Orient’s Marco Polo, Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, and Silversea ships as well as some Holland America Line and Norwegian Cruise Lines vessels.

Out of all luxury cruise lines, Orient Lines is probably the best for adult travelers and singles. Voted one of the Top 10 Large-Ship Cruise Lines by Travel+Leisure (2007), Orient Lines offers 0% supplement on selected grades, 25% for other grades, and 75% for A grades and suites. Orient Lines also features “social staff” including congenial gentleman on hand to serve as social hosts, and eight single cabins, aboard Marco Polo, consisting of B Grade – 816, D Grade – 643, 648, 656, 661, and K Grade – 267, 101, 102.

Orient Lines has sailings to Europe, Africa, Egypt, South America, Antarctica, and (spring) Transatlantic. Orient Lines cruises may range from 11 days up to 52 days or more. At the time this article was written, Orient Lines (owned by Norwegian Cruise Line) was in the process of acquiring a new owner. Details will be posted to the official Orient Lines website as they become available, www.orientlines.com.

Once you feel that you know a bit more about the different cruise lines and cruise ships, you should get to know your destinations. Depending on the cruise line, you can expect to travel to popular destinations such as the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii or romantic and exotic destinations such as Tahiti, Fiji, Australia, Bermuda, and Europe.

Cruise and cruise ship tips are always good to have, whether you are new to cruising or you have been cruising for years. Literally millions of passengers choose a cruise travel vacation each year, so the cruise industry is considered the most exciting vacation category in the United States and Canada. For starters, cruises offer more than just one opportunity to explore one place. Depending on destination and the length of cruise, you will visit several, and in some cases, dozens of different ports of call. These ports are typically filled with history or rich with nightlife, some are exotic and others are filled with opportunities to snorkel, animal watch, or relax on a pristine beach. So take your time and pick the destination that suits your activity level and interests.

After deciding where you would like to cruise (the Caribbean is popular), the next thing to consider is the cruise line. Everyone has their own preferences, so some people may prefer a casual environment and others may prefer a luxury cruise, where formal nights are always on the menu. Whatever your taste and budget, there is a cruise line to suit your needs. Some of the most popular cruise lines in the industry today include: Silversea Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Royal Caribbean International, Disney Cruise Line, and Carnival Cruise Line.

Silversea Cruises and Crystal Cruises feature luxury cruise ships cruise lines that are popular among affluent, seasoned travelers, while Regent Seven Seas attracts the same crowd, but the cruise ships are bigger and the environment is more relaxed. Regent Seven Seas is also considered one of the most romantic cruise lines in the world so their cruise ships are perfect for honeymoons. Couples can enjoy French and Polynesian dining, spa treatments, waterspouts, and romantic shore excursions such as river cruises, dinner cruises, horseback riding through the mountains, wading in the water underneath a waterfall, and more.

Royal Caribbean International is considered the perfect cruise line for first-time cruisers as it attracts a good mix of passengers from different backgrounds and with different interests. This means you’ll find a wide variety of activities, dining and entertainment options, and a very casual environment. Disney Cruise Line is perfect for families, couples, and singles looking for a festive atmosphere and excellent prices, while Carnival Cruise Line is tops for single, 20-30-somethings looking for a party atmosphere. Peak travel times are always more expensive than off-peak travel, so keep this in mind.

NYK has a number of operators and they have made several changes on the agenda for 2011. The following information was provided by Cruise Industry News and Shinji Imasaki, president of NYK Cruises.

“Firstly, our SuperStar Libra, currently homeported in Taiwan, will be deployed to Singapore from November 2010 to January 2011 due to market demand,” said Michael Goh, senior vice president of sales at Star Cruises.

The SuperStar Libra will be doing a four-night itinerary from Singapore featuring calls in Port Klang and Phuket, and a three-night itinerary visiting in Port Klang and Penang, and an additional three-night itinerary with calls in Port Klang and Langkawi.

“SuperStar Aquarius is homeporting in Hong Kong and will be sent to Penang in January to begin a four-day/three-night itinerary to Krabi and Phuket. And lastly, Star Pisces will return from Penang to homeport Hong Kong, offering a two-day/one-night itinerary in January 2011,” he added.

“If the economy remains healthy, it should be a good year,” Goh continued.

“We’re the only operator in this region with a mission to establish the Asia Pacific as an international cruise destination. We understand the wants and needs of our Asian guests and showcase the best of Asia to the international traveler through our cuisine, hospitality and entertainment programs.”

Paul Gauguin is adding more hosted themed cruises for 2011, along with more seven-night voyages, according to Oscar Abello, vice president of product planning and revenue management.

Passenger capacity for 2011 is estimated at 13,500.

Orion Expeditions is set to welcome their second ship into the fleet next May. The Orion II, currently the Clelia II for Travel Dynamics and one of the eight original ships in the Renaissance class, will join the Orion I.

To become a butler on cruise ships, you must have experience working with demanding clientele for a (minimum) 5 star vessel or hotel. Most luxury cruise lines also prefer candidates with food & beverage experience as well as a degree in hospitality.

The title may sound a bit dated and maybe even odd to some, but butlers are still a major force in the service and hospitality department on most high-end luxury cruise ships. Butlers belong to the service and hospitality department or “hotel management” department on cruise ships. They are responsible for making guests comfortable by providing outstanding room service, and light housekeeping duties.

To become a butler on cruise ships, you must have experience working with demanding clientele for a (minimum) 5 star vessel or hotel. Most luxury cruise lines also prefer candidates with food & beverage experience as well as a degree in hospitality. Candidates must speak fluent English as well as either French, Spanish, Italian, German, or Portuguese.

Butlers on cruise ships can earn anywhere from $4,166 per month up to $8,333 per month for senior level positions. Contracts are typically for six months. In addition to a competitive salary, butlers on cruise ships receive free travel to and from the ship, free accommodations and meals, discounts on goods and services aboard the ship, health insurance, and savings and retirement benefits.

To become a butler on cruise ships, you should consider signing up with a placement agency. A placement agency will ask for the same credentials as the cruise line, conduct an interview, and perform all necessary employment and background checks. The agency will schedule interviews for you with top cruise lines. If hired, the cruise line will contact the placement agency and pay them a fee. You should never have to pay a fee to a placement agency. If an agency asks for money from you up front, it is not a reputable agency. The following agencies are among the best in the business.

If you prefer to search for a position on your own and you have a cruise line in mind, you can locate the cruise lines official website by visiting the Ships and Cruises Directory at www.shipsandcruises.com. Once you have located the official website (do not apply for jobs through other websites), visit the website and search around for job postings. Most cruise line websites have a career center or job page. If the cruise line lists job openings, be sure to follow the application procedure to the letter. Your application will be discarded if it is incomplete, incoherent, or if it demonstrates an inability to follow directions.

If the cruise line does not list job openings on its site, send a polished cover letter, resume, and professional photograph to the cruise lines Human Resources Department. The Human Resources Department is typically located at the cruise line headquarters. This information is usually listed on the cruise line website. It is important to include the position you are interested in so that it can be directed to the appropriate department manager.
