The Holland America Cruise Line is certainly steeped in history and tradition, as it dates back to 1873. Though the line is now a part of the Carnival Corporation, it is still very reminiscent of its Dutch heritage. Afternoon tea is still offered each day by staff members who are mostly of Indonesian lineage, as Indonesia was formerly a Dutch colony. The majority of the HAL fleet consists of mid-sized ships with only a few of the newest additions offering a capacity in excess of 2000 passengers. But for those who do sail on a HAL vessel, luxury will be found throughout including some very well-known works of art to be enjoyed in the common areas of each ship.
What to Expect
Never fear that the traditional tone of the HAL ships means that passengers will be giving up modern conveniences. Recent updates and retooling of the more senior members of the fleet have added features such as a steakhouse, coffee shop, lounge area, a complete library and even more modern themed bars. Live stage entertainment is also a major feature on each cruise in the newly remodeled nightclub settings. A unique feature in the newly remodeled cabins is the in-room DVD player and access to a huge library of DVD’s to borrow. In addition, most cabins offer passengers the comfort of a bathtub for relaxation, which is almost an unheard of feature on most cruise ships.
Holland America Deals
The Holland America line traverses the entire globe from the warm climates of Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Tahiti to the chilly climates of Alaska and Antarctica and everything in between. With so many destinations to choose from, it can be difficult to narrow down your selection, so be sure to check out the current deals when picking your next HAL adventure. Normally, there are a few select regions which are offering deals, such as the Explore4 package. This package includes a beverage plan, dinner at the steakhouse, a reduced deposit and special pricing for a third or fourth companion. Other specials include in-depth voyages to enjoy full immersion into a region and its culture, signature experiences which are special activities to participate in before or after your cruise and the Top 10 Sailings which offer discounts on the most popular HAL cruises.
The Holland America Line has the reputation, in some circles, as the cruise line of choice for “old people” but a more accurate description would be the cruise line for discerning adults. This is not the cruise line for 20-something spring breakers or 30-somethings with toddlers in tow. But it is most definitely the cruise line for adults who are looking for a luxurious cruise among like-minded adults. HAL is the place for adults who are seeking adventure, new experiences, and enjoyment without debauchery and shenanigans.
