Peter Sommer Travels Gulet Charters

The Turkish sailing season runs from April until the end of October. Low season is spring and October and high season is summer. Prices will vary by season. Peter Sommer Travels offers a variety of gullets for charter, ranging from small to large. The company works with a wide variety of gulet owners, so they can accommodate everything from small families to large groups. Guests can charter the 8-cabin Almira, which is used for all PST scheduled escorted cruises; the 4-cabin Aquavit, or the 2-cabin Aquarius. Guests that may be interested in a larger gulet can also choose from the company’s list of owners.

The gulet Almira is the most popular PST gulet. It is considered “one of the best constructed and equipped yachts of its kind.” Almira was handmade in Turkey “from pine from the Taurus Mountains and mahogany.” “It follows a design developed for {Turkish} waters in Byzantine times. She is stylish, graceful, and bursting with character.”

Crewed yacht charters are readily available and consist of a full crew: a captain, cook, and deck hands. Additional deck hands are available depending on the size of the boat. PST offers provides “additional logistical support, from airport transfers and minibuses” to transport guests into the interior to local guides that can give guests a tour of the archaeological sites.

Gulet Cruises: What to Expect

Gulet cruises are typically three hours long. Guests can expect to engage in activities such as swimming, snorkeling, sunning and windsurfing. Mealtimes are festive events filled with local delicacies and Turkish wines. A typical breakfast on a gulet cruise may consist of bread, tomatoes, olives, cheese, eggs, yogurt, and honey. Lunch and dinner may consist of one of two main courses, accompanied by salads and mezes, followed by fruit.

What is a Gulet?

The word ‘gulet’ probably derives from the French goulette, or schooner. These two-masted wooden vessels, usually made from local pine, were long used for transport and fishing along the southern coasts of Turkey. Typically designed with a sharp bow, broad beam and rounded aft. Today these days they are designed and fitted with comfort and not trade in mind. -Petersommertravel.com
