  • A Freighter Cruise

Freighter cruises, as you might expect, take place on freighters (generally large container ships) instead of regular cruise ships. Because cargo ships are very unlike the ships operated by cruise lines, trips taken on freighter cruises are fundamentally different experiences than standard cruise vacations. A freighter cruise is like a regular cruise in approximately the same way a school bus is like a limousine, although this perhaps paints an unduly negative picture of freighter cruises (and freighter cruise enthusiasts would probably resist the comparison too). Since a trip on a freighter cruise is an oft-overlooked travel option, we decided to compile some basic information about them below. Read more […]
  • Whale Watching Cruises: What Kind of Whales Can You See?

Whale watching cruises, as the name implies, center on observing whales. Whale watching cruises are about sailing around the ocean in an effort to see a whale or multiple whales, and basically nothing else. This means that whale watching cruises are fundamentally different from normal cruise vacations because those who take the latter normally engage in several activities (spa visits, gambling in the casino, poolside lounging, etc.) and seek more than one end (to relax, see different parts of the world, etc.). Since whale watching cruises are focused on one particular goal – watching whales – this leads to an inevitable question: what kind of whales can you see on a whale watching cruise? If you are so interested in seeing whales that you want to take a cruise just to observe them, it seems like you ought to know what whales are possible to see. And that’s where we come in… Read more […]
  • Cruises from New York

Cruises from New York? Is that possible? Indeed it is, as there are numerous cruises from New York every year, which are offered by at least six different cruise lines: Carnival, Norwegian, Disney, Holland America, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean. In March alone, there were 13 cruises from New York, and there are even more leaving in the month of April. Cruises from New York travel to several different destinations, from the Caribbean to Canada, from the Bahamas to Europe. Since not many people associate New York with cruise ships (or really anything about the cruise industry), we figured it was high time for an article explaining the important details about cruises that depart from New York. (We’ll start with this one: by “cruises from New York,” we mean “cruises from New York City.” One port is in Manhattan, and there is another port for particularly large ships in Brooklyn. There is also a port in New Jersey called the Cape Liberty Cruise Port.) Read more […]
  • Antarctic Cruises: Which Cruise Ships Sail to Antarctica?

Antarctica is a distant land to sail to, and it certainly isn’t a routine destination for a cruise vacation (in contrast to places like the Caribbean or Alaska, for example). Yet people do take cruises to Antarctica, which means there must be cruise ships that take Antarctic Cruises, and indeed there are. These Antarctic cruise ships vary in style and the accommodations they offer, but they all tend to be rather small, holding only around 50 to 200 people. There probably isn’t enough demand for cruises to Antarctica to fill a huge cruise ship, and moreover a large cruise ship could be hard to maneuver in some of the more remote areas of the Antarctic region. In this article, we’ll look at a few different cruise ships that travel to Antarctica to get a sense of what they are like. Read more […]
  • Antarctic Cruises: Where Can You Go?

Antarctic cruises are often thought of as cruises to Antarctica, and, of course, they are. But “Antarctic cruise” is actually a broader term, covering cruises that sail to areas like South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, not just voyages to the continent of Antarctica. For those considering cruises to this remote part of the world, this is important to keep in mind – there are more Antarctic cruises than you might imagine from which to chose. Read more […]
  • Antarctic Cruises: What Can You See?

Antarctic cruises are one of the more radical cruise vacations that an individual can take. Given Antarctica’s placement on the globe (it’s the southernmost continent), a cruise to Antarctica will be a fairly lengthy undertaking, although this of course depends on where you will begin your trip. More likely than not, you’ll have to book a flight to a port that is far south of the equator – a port like the one in Ushuaia, Argentina, to which two British cruise ships were recently denied entry – and once you arrive to port, your journey to Antarctica is only beginning. However, when you do finally arrive to the Antarctic region of the world, you’ll be rewarded with views that are rarely seen by human eyes. Read more […]
