Fred. Olsen has premiered via their website a brand new virtual cruise hub, offering tours, blogs, recipes and more for those looking to get a healthy dose of culture and learning while in quarantine. The cruise line has suspended operations until May 23, but that doesn’t mean they’re planning on leaving their loyal travelers out to dry. In a statement, the Head of Digital, Ben Williams said, “We may not be able to cruise across our wonderful world as we normally would, but we can bring many of the joys of cruising to our guests at home.”
And there are plenty of joys to check out! The online program is known as the Bridge, and is available here. The page begins with a daily quote, as well as a stream of news relating to the cruise line. Visitors can then take engaging 3D tours of different Fred. Olsen ships, which is a surprisingly engaging activity. Plus, you get to explore cruise ships with no one else on them, which you’d never get to do in real life. Which is awesome! You can visit restaurants, decks, public areas, pools, and more, although the digital pool may not be quite as satisfying as the real deal.
Aside from these tours, there are also a series of blogs packed with words and photos that recreate the cruise experience while adding in behind-the-scenes perspective that one wouldn’t normally get while on a cruise. The current theme of all of the content is Norwegian, and the fjord blog is a nice read for those relaxing at home right now.
Beyond these main sections, there’s a lot of content to engage in. Currently there’s a short story contest where the winner earns a free cruise for two, videos, links to other sites, puzzles and more. The Bridge also aims to build community with sections like the Recipe Corner, which allows guests to submit recipes that might end up displayed on the site for others to try out.
It may not give you the sensation of the salty air and stinging sun (ouch…) that a cruise does, but there’s a lot to do here. It builds community and helps entertain us while we’re bored at home…what’s not to love? They plan to switch up the theme every week, so keep a close eye and see what kind of new content Fred. Olsen has to roll out!
