Balancing safety and economics has been a difficult trick to pull off since the beginning of the pandemic, and it is one that the cruise industry is still stuck struggling with. Companies have continually pushed back the date that they feel will be safe to start sailing again, which makes sense considering the ever-changing nature of our knowledge of coronavirus. Still, many people are wondering what is the earliest date that cruises can start again. Different sources say different things, but it seems we finally have a definitive answer, as one cruise line has announced that they will be the first to begin sailing since the pandemic began.
Which cruise line is it?
American Cruise Lines is the company aiming to be the first back in the game in the United States. The small cruise line has done surprisingly well this year, even reporting that their 2021 bookings are far higher than normal. They have a pretty packed schedule for the next year or so, so it makes sense that they want to get started up again as soon as possible. They have one new boat coming this year, two more next year, and a record number of bookings to fulfill. They’ve got work to do!
Will it be safe?
This is the question that matters most, really. We’d like to stress that we are not doctors and that we absolutely cannot give you any sort of recommendations when it comes to your own health. With that being said, we can report on what exactly is American Cruise Lines’ plan when it comes to keeping their guests safe. First of all, they are planning on lowering the capacity of their ships to a far lower number than what is typical. Their ships will be accommodating about 180 people, which is indeed lower than the capacity of 250 recommended by the CDC. Additionally, the cruise line has made a recent partnership with a health company called Vikand Solutions, which will be advising them on making their ships as safe as possible and helping out with health care on board. You can read about their safety protocol on their website
When are they starting?
Their first sailings will be on the American Song. It departs on June 20th and will sail across the Snake and Columbia Rivers. Next up is the American Harmony on June 28th, with the American Constallation slated for an Alaskan cruise in late June as well.
Again: we are not doctors and can’t recommend you to do anything that could potentially be dangerous. If you’re interested in these cruises and how they plan to keep their guests safe, we urge you to do your own research and decide for yourself if a cruise would be the safest decision.
