  • Freedom Ship: What Would Life be Like on the Biggest Ship of All Time?

We recently wrote an article introducing our readers to Freedom Ship, the biggest ship of all time (if it’s ever built). We explained the basic plan and aim of the Freedom Ship endeavor, which boiled down to this: the goal isn’t so much to build the biggest ship ever (in part because Freedom Ship isn’t a traditional ship at all) as it is to create a “city at sea,” a community of workers, vacationers, and retirees that float around the world’s oceans. Although it is not clear if Freedom Ship will ever be built, it’s a fascinating concept, and after writing an introduction to the project, we couldn’t help but dig a little deeper. Based on the claims of the project’s promotional material, we thought it would be interesting to imagine what life on board Freedom Ship would be like. What is it like to live in a city at sea, one with no tie to fixed earth? Read more […]
  • Freedom Ship: An Introduction to the Biggest Ship of All Time

Freedom Ship is an ambitious project that aims to build the biggest ship of all time – by far. The official website of Freedom Ship claims that the primary focus on the project is not to build the biggest ship of all time. Rather, the goal is to build the world’s first mobile community – this mobile community would float around the sea, which is why it is called Freedom Ship. What is Freedom Ship, and will the planned behemoth ever become a reality? Read more […]

  • What Makes a Cruise Ship a Cruise Ship

A cruise ship is a cruise ship is a cruise ship, right? Well, that’s what we thought, until we started seriously considering what precisely makes one type of ship a cruise ship. What are the essential attributes of a cruise ship? If a cruise ship lacked one of these attributes, would it cease to be a cruise ship? Are there characteristics of a ship that necessarily make it a cruise ship? This is a grave ontological question, at least for those of us who take our cruises seriously, so below you’ll find a list of characteristics that ships must possess in order to be properly labeled a “cruise ship.” Read more […]
