The Difference Between Freedom Ship, the “City at Sea,” and Freedom of the Seas, the Royal Caribbean International Ship
The word “freedom” is used in a lot of names, including cruise ship names. This makes a certain amount of sense, as freedom is among the chief rights preserved and valued in almost all civilized societies. Why wouldn’t you want to name your company after freedom? Because the word is used so often, however, it is often hard to keep all the different “freedom” names straight. For example, you may confuse Freedom Ship, a wild ambition to build a city at sea, and Freedom of the Seas, a large cruise ship in the Royal Caribbean International fleet. Although nominally similar, Freedom Ship and Freedom of the Seas are entirely different entities. One is a cruise ship, the other a plan in the works, so Freedom Ship and Freedom of the Seas don’t even share the most basic ontological trait, namely, existence. Below is a little bit about Freedom Ship and Freedom of the Seas, which we have supplied to make the difference between the two crystal clear. Read more […] -
Freedom Ship: Will the Biggest Ship of All Time Ever be Built?
We’ve recently been writing about Freedom Ship, which if built would be the biggest ship of all time a few times over. We wrote an introduction to Freedom Ship, and we also speculated about what life would be like on board Freedom Ship. You’ll notice that we wrote “if built” above, and this is an essential part of the Freedom Ship project – at this point, it is merely a dream, one that almost certainly won’t be realized any time soon. The biggest ship of all time is as of now not a ship at all; indeed, there is not even a finalized plan for the Freedom Ship’s design. Will Freedom Ship ever be built? Read more […] -
Freedom Ship: What Would Life be Like on the Biggest Ship of All Time?
We recently wrote an article introducing our readers to Freedom Ship, the biggest ship of all time (if it’s ever built). We explained the basic plan and aim of the Freedom Ship endeavor, which boiled down to this: the goal isn’t so much to build the biggest ship ever (in part because Freedom Ship isn’t a traditional ship at all) as it is to create a “city at sea,” a community of workers, vacationers, and retirees that float around the world’s oceans. Although it is not clear if Freedom Ship will ever be built, it’s a fascinating concept, and after writing an introduction to the project, we couldn’t help but dig a little deeper. Based on the claims of the project’s promotional material, we thought it would be interesting to imagine what life on board Freedom Ship would be like. What is it like to live in a city at sea, one with no tie to fixed earth? Read more […] -
Freedom Ship: An Introduction to the Biggest Ship of All Time
Freedom Ship is an ambitious project that aims to build the biggest ship of all time – by far. Freedom Ship, which as of now is little more than dream that is still in the development stages (the design of the ship isn’t even complete), would be vastly larger than any other ship ever built. Indeed, it’s not even clear if Freedom Ship can be properly called a “ship” – it would be, literally, a floating city. The official website of Freedom Ship claims that the primary focus on the project is not to build the biggest ship of all time. Rather, the goal is to build the world’s first mobile community – this mobile community would float around the sea, which is why it is called Freedom Ship. What is Freedom Ship, and will the planned behemoth ever become a reality? Read more […]
