    How to Book Repositioning Cruises

Repositioning cruises are, as implied, cruises that reposition ships from one region of the globe to another. Cruise ships need to be relocated to fit the demands of the cruising seasons, and it is an added bonus that a cruise line can charge passengers to come along for the relocation. This much was covered in our article on the basics of repositioning cruises, which are also called “repo cruises” and “transitional cruises.” We also covered the discounts available for repositioning cruises, as well as explained the type of people who can take one of these unique vacations. But this still leaves a gap in our coverage: how can you actually book a repositioning cruise? You might know that you want to and can take a repositioning cruise, and you might even know which type you want to take, but still not know exactly how to book one. As a consequence, we have explained below how to book a repositioning cruise. Read more […]

How to Find and Book Family Cruise Packages

As we explained in our previous article about family cruise packages, the word “package,” when used in a context related to vacations, tends to imply discounted travel. People look for “package deals,” like a cruise-flight combo, in the hope of saving money. However, there are few discounts for a group of cruise passengers that are offered only on the basis of that group being a family. Regardless, there are ways to save money while taking a family cruise, even if these deals aren’t marketed as a “family cruise package.” One can think of them this way, though, and below we show you how to find and book these family cruise packages. • Oceania Cruises: An Overview

    Oceania Cruises: An Overview

Oceania Cruises, sometimes called “Oceania Cruise Line” or just “Oceania,” is a luxury cruise line based in Miami, Florida. It is owned by Apollo Global Management, the enormous American private equity firm that also owns (among many other things) another luxury cruise line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Oceania operates four vessels and is the largest luxury cruise line in the world. (Although the word “luxury” is somewhat imprecise, so perhaps a larger cruise line that calls itself “luxurious” – an attractive marketing word – is larger.) Like other luxury cruise lines, Oceania Cruises is less well-known than some of the giants of the cruise industry, so below we shed some light on the company and its cruises. Read more […]
  • The Google Barges

    The Google Barges

Google seems to be involved in just about every industry, including the shipping industry. Well, probably not the shipping industry exactly, but Google does evidently own two barges, barges that as of yet have no discernible purpose. The first Google barge came to light recently, after reports surfaced that indicated that Google was building a barge in the San Francisco Bay. Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that there is another Google barge near the coast of Maine. What role could barges possibly play in the Google empire? Read more […]

How to Book a Booze Cruise in NYC

In our previous article about the booze cruises of NYC, we explained what a New York City booze cruise is, and we also covered some of the companies that offer them (like the New York Booze Cruise based in Manhattan). One thing we did not touch on, however, was how to book a booze cruise in NYC, which isn’t necessarily complicated, but the process does vary from company to company, and in any case it is a lot different from booking a regular cruise. It should be pretty obvious that booking an NYC booze cruise is different from booking a regular cruise, but only if you know what a booze cruise is. Otherwise, the fact that it’s called a booze cruise could cause confusion. Below we explain booking an NYC booze cruise with the companies we discussed in our previous article; that is, we discuss how to book a booze cruise with the companies that are more or less fully committed to booze cruises and nothing but booze cruises. • The 38 Year Anniversary of the Sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald

The 38 Year Anniversary of the Sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald

On November 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior, taking the lives of all 29 crew members on board. Nearly 40 years later, it’s a tragedy that still stings. To help commemorate the lives of those who died in the Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy, there will be a memorial service this Sunday (November 10, 2013), 38 years to the day after the sinking occurred. The service will take place in River Rogue, Michigan, the small town where the ship was built between 1958 and 1959. The venue for the event is a heated tent near the Mariners Memorial Lighthouse at Belanger Park. Read more […]
