    Mississippi River Cruises: An Overview

Cruise vacations are deeply intertwined with the experience of being at sea, and rightfully so, as cruises are generally affairs that take place on the ocean. However, cruises can take place on other bodies of water, including rivers, provided the river is large enough to accommodate a ship that might meaningfully be called a “cruise ship.” One river that is definitely large enough is the Mississippi River, and there are plenty of cruises that sail along it. Mississippi River cruises take a number of different forms: they can be long or short, take place in a large ship or a small ship, cover most of the river or only a small portion, and so on. A Mississippi River cruise can also emphasize different things; some Mississippi River cruises are essentially quick sightseeing trips, whereas others are primarily slow, leisurely trips down the Mississippi. In this article, we sort out all you need to know about Mississippi River cruises. Read more […]
  • Tauck River Cruises

Tauck river cruises are river cruises that are offered by Tauck, a company that operates not only cruises, but also land-based tours. The company is sometimes misspelled as “Tack,” such that people on occasion search for Tack river cruises or Tack tours that don’t exist, as if small pointy nails offered land and sea journeys across the world. Although Tauck offers a staggering variety of different adventure vacations, ranging from Tanzanian safaris to winter treks in Yellowstone, the present article focuses only on Tauck river cruises, of which there are many. • How to Book a Russian River Cruise

Consistent with our recent practice of writing about a river cruise and then explaining how to book one, we are here to explain how to book a Russian river cruise, which, as the first clause of this sentence suggests, comes on the heels of our overview of Russian river cruises. (We should note that by “Russian river cruise,” we mean cruises on rivers in Russia, not cruises on the Russian river in Northern California.) We feel compelled to write these follow-up articles because we are describing cruises that fall outside what might be loosely called “mainstream cruising” – that is, the cruise vacations operated by major cruise lines that take place on enormous ships that sail around the ocean – and since they fall outside the boundaries of traditional cruising, they call aloud for explanation. We have explained what Russian river cruises are, and so now we must explain how to book one. Is there anything special about booking a Russian river cruise? Is a difficult to book a Russian river cruise? Read more […]
  • Russian River Cruises

Russian river cruises are, as you might imagine, river cruises that take place in Russia, or sometimes near Russia, as you’ll see. (Ok, they could also be cruises on the Russian River in California, but as far as we know no such cruises exist.) Russian river cruises have the same virtues as the many other river cruises we have written about. They are an excellent way to see large portions of Russia in a convenient, efficient, and leisurely way, and a Russian river cruise can also be an easy way to travel around the country without the hassle of dealing with airports or rental cars (or hotels, for that matter, because your accommodation is supplied by the cruise ship). So, if you have any inclination to visit Russia, a Russian river cruise can be an excellent way to do it. From this belief springs the present article, which supplies an overview of Russian river cruises to give you some orientation in a niche of the cruise industry you might not have considered.
