Abandoned Ghost Lyubov Orlova Cruise Ship Filled with Starving, Diseased Cannibal Rats Approaches U.K.
After being adrift at sea for over a year, a cruise ship loaded with diseased and potentially cannibalistic rats is heading toward the U.K. and Irish coastlines. The Lyubov Orlova, a Soviet Union vessel built in 1976 for pleasure cruises, could potentially crash into Scotland, England, or Ireland if the vessel is not intercepted at sea. Although it has yet to be confirmed that the ship is still floating, there are indications that it has not sunken, making the forsaken ship, which may carry plenty of disease thanks to its rodent crew, a live threat. How did a cruise ship filled with rat cannibals end up floating aimlessly across the North Atlantic? Read more […] -

The Maersk Triple E Class: The Largest Container Ships in the World
At one point or another, you have probably heard that the “global economy is becoming increasingly interconnected” or some similar such phrase. While accurate, these statements aren’t particularly informative: how exactly are various markets across the world intertwined with one another? One obvious way is that products made in one country are distributed across the world, and these products are often distributed by enormous container ships. A new class of such gigantic container ships – indeed, the largest container ships in the world – was recently commissioned by Maersk, the Danish business conglomerate, and the first vessels (out of a planned 20) have recently gone into operation. The container ships belonging to the “Maersk Triple E class” are built by Daewoo Shipbuilding, a South Korean company that is the second largest shipbuilder in the world. (Daewoo also had an automobile division, which is now owned by GM.) Below is some basic information about the Maersk Triple E class and how the ships in this group compare to other enormous vessels. A Floating Silicon Valley? Introducing Blueseed, the Newest Dream for a City at Sea
Lots of people want to start a technology company, lots of people want to work in the United States, and lots of people want to found a tech start-up and work in the United States. While starting a technology company is theoretically possible in many parts of the world, perhaps no place is as hospitable to the enterprise as Silicon Valley, land of the tech giants and source of seemingly endless investment resources. However, not just anyone can work in the U.S. (you need a work visa), but one might be able to work near the U.S., like on the Blueseed, a ship that, if built, would be a floating city of tech start ups where employees can both work and live long-term. Blueseed, which is both the name of the potential ship and the company that hopes to build it, would float 12 miles off the coast of California, in close proximity to Silicon Valley, but not subject to U.S. immigration laws, giving international tech start ups access to American resources without the hassle of work visas.
